How To: Play Catch with Your Son

Growing up, I didn’t play T-ball or softball. My oldest two sons have played baseball now for over four years. When my boys would ask me to play catch with them all those years ago, it was easy and fun. As they’ve grown, so has their skill and speed. What was once a chill game of catch has morphed into hurling balls at each other’s face with so much force it could break a window – pure chaos. Or at least that’s what it looked liked to me!

After turning them down one too many times, they quit asking and before I knew it, Dad was the only one they wanted to play catch with. It hurt, but I knew it was 100% my own doing. After a surprisingly long search, I came across this Hometown All Stars YouTube channel. It’s made for kids, but let’s be honest, that’s where my skill set existed.

Here’s their video on the basics of throwing.

These were awesome, and even let me offer a few tips of my own to help the boys improve. Helped me feel like an active part of the family again, and the boys are now back to asking me to play catch – Win, Win! Still working on winging the ball back at them and not being so scared to catch their crazy fastballs. Baby steps am I right?!

Let me know if you find any other resources out there. Good luck and Play Ball!
